My Two-Cents: Was it a (Pre-planned) Party in the USA?
After the patriotic holiday, I can’t help but wonder if Miley knew what she was doing when she dropped the bombshell hit "Party In the USA" on the entire world. Was it a pre-planned party in the USA? Or something you throw together at 17 when your parents ditch town for the weekend last minute. Surely, Miley must have known she was doing something sensational. Or maybe she didn’t. And don’t call me Shirley.
I would presume Miley had a slight inkling that she was producing a banger. But she probably was unaware of how profound the impact would be. She had no idea a cultural reset was in her hands. All she really knew for sure was that the Jay-Z song was on, her hands were up, and she was going to be okay.
Some of the coolest things we do start in an unknowing attempt. It’s hard to measure the rigor and capacitance of what will later be something great until it’s all said and done. That’s the epitome of “Hindsight is 20/20.” The other day I remarked in a conversation how I think it would have been cool to see the Rolling Stones in their prime. Mick Jagger in the flesh. But someone replied that it’s hard to see bands in their prime because you don’t really know when they're in it until they’re out of it. That and I don’t have any money.
Another thing to add is Miley didn’t even write Party in the USA. Jessie J wrote it but deemed it was unfit for her persona and passed it over to Cyrus. She probably knew it was good shit but was unaware she was sitting on a gold mine. Miley ended up taking a shot at it and rolled with it. Which ended up rolling her to the top charts. We could all learn a little from Party in the USA -- you might not know that you're creating something cool until it’s finished. So your best bet it to just take a jab at it and see where it takes you. She hopped off the plane at LAX, with a dream and her cardigan. Welcome to the land of Fame Excess, Miley, you’ll definitely fit in.
Happy 5th of July!
