My Two-Cents: Sunday Non-Funday
I’m not a big fan of the Sunday. I’m a big fan of the Friday. Friday rocks! I get home from class, kick my feet up, and chillax. I’m too busy thinking about all the upcoming free time I have to worry about my To-Do list. In the meantime, what’s everyone up to… Happy hour? Fuck it, I’m there! Hang out with some friends? Count me in. Saturday morning hits? Time to sit in my PJs for however long I please. Who is the boss now, ha ha ha. Time to binge-watch Shrek 1-4 because I HAVE SO MUCH TIME!!!
Then Sunday strikes, and the aforementioned free time? Poof. She’s gone. Dissipated into thin air. And then comes all this chatter about Monday... And how much there is to do this week so everyone spent the entire weekend preparing. To which I nod and agree. I definitely did not prepare for the week by playing bartender (to the woman in the mirror) and making a new playlist of songs I would mash together if I were a DJ. (I think I could slide Van Halen into Tory Lanez seamlessly if I matched the beats right. But that is a problem I will tackle next weekend.)
Maybe I need a career change so Sundays aren’t such a drag. Perhaps I will apply to be a long snapper for the Miami Dolphins. Long snappers don’t do that much anyway. (There are a lot of rules protecting them, so I won’t have to worry about brain damage down the road. I learned all of this from a Freakonomics Podcast linked below.) Plus Miami seems like a cool place to live – and the weather is way better than Minnesota. And to top it off, Sunday won't be such a drag, but rather a day I look forward to! The only problem is I don't have any experience long snapping. So I’ll probably have to ride out this dental school thing for the foreseeable future. At least I can (hopefully) take off Mondays as a dentist so Sundays aren’t a day of stress. I can push that stress off to Monday! This is fine because Mondays suck regardless.
So what did I do this weekend? Besides practice for when I get aux (against everyone's better judgment) next weekend. Well, I spent a lot of time in the city. Roku City, to be exact. You might think that’s lame. And you might be right. But I didn't have the funds to fly to my usual city of hangout this weekend: Hangover City, US. (Average Population, Me.) So in light of the money I saved on this plane ticket (flights cost 5+ beers or well liquor mixed drink of choice, a bidirectional Uber, and 2 days of regret), Roku City doesn’t seem so bad! Roku City seems like a step in the right direction for me. Which, to get around to my point, is sometimes all we can aim for. There are times to take big steps. Like a career change to the Miami Dolphins. But more often than not, it’s good enough to just take a little step – Flying into Roku City instead of Hangover City. Little steps don’t seem like a big change at the time, but they can cumulate into big ones with time. Like if I would learn to do a little work every day, maybe I wouldn’t dread Sundays so much. Maybe Sunday wouldn't be a day I dread, but rather one I spend lounging on the couch watching Shrek, practicing my bartender skills, and playing DJ. I'm going to test this theory out this week. Circle back around next Sunday for the results.
