My Two-Cents: The Children Yearn for the Mines (and the Radio)

With easy access to whatever playlist, song, artist, album, and podcast at my fingers, one would think the desire for radio would have dissipated by now. However, I often find myself falling into a radio-adjacent-like listening pattern. In the constant buzz of things, I usually have some sort of background noise going on: my AirPods and I are attached at the hip, and I rotate through playlists and podcasts throughout my day. And not so much rotating, but rather intermixing, in a radio-esque fashion. It seems to me like one thing holds true – no matter how far technology advances, the children still yearn for the mines, and I still yearn for the radio.

My recent background soundtrack usually consists of a couple of different Spotify playlists, which I intermix into my current favorite podcast fixes. My favorite right now is Brooke and Connor Start a Podcast (which is worth the listen if you haven’t already). It’s basically just a conversation between two people that reminds me a lot of a normal radio conversation. I’ll listen for about 20 minutes, then switch back to my music. Basically, I’m unintentionally re-creating the same radio setup I used to make fun of my dad for listening to me on the way to school. Technology advances, but we all essentially stay the same (even if we don’t mean to). My primitive desire for radio seems to precede me; maybe we are simpler creatures than we would like to admit. No matter how far my phone can take me, I seem to unintentionally crave the radio in all its ad-shaken glory. The children really do yearn for the mines. Why fight it? I’m going to lean into my radio addiction and admit maybe my dad was on to something with his radio niche. He was Sioux Falls Radio's number-one listener on his way to drop me off at school, and I found it extremely annoying at the time. I figured it made much more sense to just put on a damn CD! But alas, I throw in the towel and admit to his radio enlightenment. The only radio-itch my podcast/playlist set list doesn’t scratch is the lack of call-in trivia. If Spotify podcasts could somehow create a call-in feature to let me flex my childhood overindulgence in trivia crack, my world would be complete.

Here are some of my current favorite podcasts to intermix in case you're looking to spice up your own radio station --
